Ruth Isobel Young

The family of Ruth Young is sad to announce her passing on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at the Arabella Retirement Living Residence in Belleville. Beloved wife of the late Herbert Young (former President of Loyalist College). Dear stepmother of Peter (Lisa) Young of Owen Sound.  Beloved daughter of the late Leonard and Edna Sharpe, formerly of Stirling. Dear sister of the late Burton Sharpe (late Marion).  Ruth will be deeply missed by nieces, Carol Sharpe, Jean Oliver and Kathy Blakeley and their families.  She will also be missed by her many dear friends and her pets, Hugo and Betsy.

In her lifetime Ruth enjoyed many interesting experiences. After graduating from Queen’s University, she taught secondary school in Oshawa.  She was approached to accept a position in public relations at General Motors and thrived in this role.  During this time Ruth served on the Board of Directors at Durham College.  Following her marriage to Herb, Ruth moved to Belleville.  After Herb’s retirement in 1988 they travelled extensively.  They both maintained a keen interest in the life of Loyalist College.  After Herb’s passing in 2006, Ruth was a visible presence at Loyalist where she proudly presented the Herbert Young Leadership Award to deserving students.  She also attended convocations and special functions at the college.  Ruth also enjoyed her years of volunteering at Albert College in Belleville where she could fulfil her lifetime commitment to learning.  Perhaps Ruth’s most endearing legacy was her love of animals and her concern for their welfare.  Ruth faithfully supported many animal charities.  On Thursday, July 28, 2022 there will be a brief Dedication Ceremony at Loyalist College at 1:30 p.m.  A pedestrian/cyclist path will be named in Herb and Ruth’s honour.  Following the dedication friends and family are invited to a reception in the Link Lounge at the college.  Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel (613-968-2273).  Memorial Donations to Loyalist College or the Quinte Humane Society would be a fitting tribute.  Ruth will be buried in Guelph, ON beside her beloved husband Herb.  “Oh!
