Obituary of Tom & Pat Riddell
Riddell, Tom (1927- 2019) and Riddell, Pat (1933 - 2019)
In loving memory of Thomas Signey Riddell, who died unexpectedly, on Sunday, September 22, 2019, and Patricia Maureen Riddell, who ended her struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease, on Wednesday, September 25, 2019.
Married for 64 years, and together even longer, they shared a dream of home and family. Leaving everything and everyone they knew, they emigrated from England to Canada in 1956. There, in Ontario, they built a life and family, rich in humour and love.
Dad was a draftsman, and earned his Professional Engineer designation shortly after arriving in Canada. Earning his teaching certificate, he spent many years as an instructor at Loyalist College in Belleville until his retirement. A born leader, he also served as chairman of the Electrical Technology Department there. A man of many interests, his passion was music. He joined the ANAF Pipe Band, and soon after, became part of the 8 Wing Band at Trenton Air Base. He performed in air shows, tattoos, and even went to Scotland for international piping competitions. Dad had a great sense of humour, and his full laugh, with his head thrown back, was our reward for a story well told. Dad was friendly and gregarious, and had good friendships, which he kept over many years.
Mom was a homemaker while the children were small, and it was obvious she loved her home. Mom would spend time crafting beautiful decorations to make a home that was unique and cozy. A devoted gardener, mom created stunning gardens, which we enjoyed at many family gatherings. A former beauty queen, Mom had a flair for fashion and was always impeccably dressed, although a constant twinkle in her eye, and her beautiful smile, let you know she did not take this too seriously. After working as a bookkeeper for several years, Mom joined the accounting department at Loyalist College, where she worked until retirement. Mom had a deep compassion for children, and volunteered for many years with Bridging the Gap in Belleville.
Dad had traveled the world as a young man as part of the British Merchant Navy and the RAF, and it was their dream to travel together. Camping in Maine every year until they retired, they then enjoyed many destinations as a loving couple, including Europe and the Caribbean.
For them, “Home” was always each other, they are home now.
They are sadly missed and dearly loved by their children, Jane (Andrew), Paul (Katie) and Lynn (Scot). Beloved Grandma and Pop to Maureen, Brandon, Revan, Sean, Leah and Ben.
In keeping with their wishes, cremation has already taken place. Our family has organized a Celebration of their lives, which will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2019 between 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at 160 Bleecker Ave, Belleville, Ontario. All who knew them are welcome to stop by.
Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society, or the Quinte Humane Society would be kindly appreciated in Mom and Dad’s memories.
